The trend may be downwards on motorcycle accidents, as The Herald reported in May 2013. However the fact remains that your are very much more likely to be involved in a serious or fatal accident as a motorcyclist than you are as a motorist, pedestrian or pedal cyclist.

The overall number of motorbike accidents in Scotland fell by more than 20% over two years, from 1037 in 2009 to 827 in 2011, although motoring experts believe this has been partly driven by a decline in leisure motorbiking, reflecting the stagnant economic climate. High-profile publicity campaigns and police crackdowns on speeding are also thought to have contributed.

In 2011, 33 motorcyclists and passengers were killed in crashes and collisions, with the majority of incidents concentrated in the central belt and the east of coast of Scotland.

Most Common Types Of Motorcycle Accidents

There are a few types of road traffic accidents that are also more likely to affect motorcyclists than other road users. For inexperienced riders (aged under 21), 2/3 of accidents occur on roads in built up areas, four out of five accidents occur when the victim is riding a bike of 125cc or less and one in three accidents involve no other vehicle.

For an older age group, 35-55, 60 per cent of accidents occur on non built up roads (with a speed limit of more than 40 mph), 66 per cent are on a motorbike of more than 125cc and again 33 per cent of accidents involved no other vehicle.

Accidents can be partly attributed to the lower visibility of motorbikes generally, when compared to cars and lorries for example, but an equally important factor lies with the simple lack of physical protection afforded by the motorcycle itself – particularly at high speeds or in dangerous road conditions. It is estimated that for every mile that is travelled, motorcyclists have 34-fold greater risk of death than other categories of road users.

The basic fact is that statistically, bikers are more likely to be involved in an accident than everyone else on the roads and when there is an accident, the injuries and outcome are very much more likely to be serious, often devastatingly serious.
